If you're using or considering GLP-1 receptor agonist medications like Wegovy, Ozempic, or Mounjaro for weight management or type 2 diabetes, it's crucial to understand how these medicines may affect contraception and reproductive health.

On 5 June 2025, the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued updated guidance urging women to use effective contraception while taking GLP-1 medicines

This follows growing concerns that these medications—popularly known as “skinny jabs”—may interfere with the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, especially in women who are overweight or obese.

Why the Warning?

GLP-1 medicines work by mimicking a hormone that slows gastric emptying and increases feelings of fullness. However, this same mechanism can delay or reduce the absorption of oral medications, including the contraceptive pill. Additionally, side effects like vomiting or diarrhoea—common in the early stages of treatment—can further compromise the pill’s effectiveness

The MHRA now advises:

Wegovy and Ozempic: Women should use contraception while on the medication and for two months after stopping before trying to conceive.

Mounjaro: Women should use contraception during treatment and for one month after stopping. Importantly, those using oral contraceptives should also use a non-oral method (e.g., condoms, coil, or implant) for at least four weeks after starting Mounjaro or after any dose increase.

Real-Life Impact

The BBC recently shared the story of Natasha Major, a 26-year-old woman who became unexpectedly pregnant while taking Mounjaro and the contraceptive pill

Despite having polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which typically makes conception more difficult, Natasha conceived just six weeks into treatment. Her experience highlights the importance of understanding how these medications interact with hormonal contraception.

What This Means for You

If you're a woman of reproductive age using GLP-1 medications, here are some key takeaways:
  1. Consult your GP or pharmacist before starting or continuing any GLP-1 treatment.
  2. Review your contraceptive method—consider switching to or adding a non-oral option.
  3. Do not use these medications during pregnancy, while trying to conceive, or while breastfeeding.
  4. If you become pregnant while on a GLP-1 medicine, stop the medication immediately and seek medical advice.
